Bet you don't have one of these! This is a rare, probably the only one, what I believe to be a prototype cash register that was in the National Cash Register archives.
I was told by a retired NCR employee(the late Howard Reams), who volunteered at the archives that, based upon the model room tag of 1309, this is a Hayden Cash Register. Apparently this is one of the many companies that the National Cash Register company acquired over the years in an effort to eliminate the competitive factor or to gain their patent rights.
This is an interesting design for a register with a "typewriter" style keyboard. This is for controlling the movement of inner mechanisms based upon the amount selected. The amount indicator flags are arranged 0-9 and put into a sliding rack mechanism which slides forward and back based upon the amount selected and then there is a brass bar that lifts them up to be displayed after they slide to the appropriate denomination. There are several number decals missing or damaged and one of the glass panels is broken off but provided in the drawer and another with a broken corner.
This register is a drawer operated unit. It gets all of it's operational motion from the opening/closing of the drawer. It rely's upon springs to make the drawer open.
This register is a non resetting total adder. It is designed to print every sale on the journal tape and also allow printing onto a check or receipt that would be inserted into the slot on the right side lower front of the machine. To read the total sales for the day you would pull down on the lever located on the right side front of the register and it would print on the journal that figure.
When I got it it was partially disassembled, did not work, and there was some wood trim missing along 2 of the sides on the bottom. I made exact replica's of the other 2 sides and attached them. I also at that time refinished the wood base unit to make it all match.
There was also several springs missing and it was out of time. I replaced the springs and finally figured out how it should be timed and now it works fairly well. With all of that being said, this register is a fairly finicky unit.
The case is nickel plated brass and all I did to it was clean it so it does have wear through the plating as one would expect for something this old. There is also a few repairable cracks to where it was leaded together. The drawer doesn't show any signs of wear or use at all and that is the finish that it had when I got it.
It has a model room tag of 1309 attached to it as well as a heavy paper tag in the drawer with the same model number hand written on it.
From studying the inner workings of this unit I feel strongly that this register was a working prototype for a variety of reasons. To name just a few, it is constructed internally from primarily brass plates and steel shafts with brass parts attached to them with set screws to allow easy
placement and
timing adjustments of the parts. Using primarily brass construction would wear quickly and would be too expensive for a production machine. There are obvious signs of corrections to the location of some of the parts. The amount flags on top are glass plates with a number glued on them. If this was a production unit I would expect the flags to not be see through to allow a decal to be attached on both the front and back of it as this is obviously a rear indicator register as well as front. The little characters on the printer portion of this register are glued on the print drum as opposed to being engraved on it.
The dimensions on this are 20 1/2" wide by 16 7/8" front to back. It stands 19 3/4" high. There is no evidence that it ever had a topsign as there are no holes for mounting one.
What you see is what you get.
This register weighs 108 pounds before packaging and as it is a fairly delicate internal mechanism I do not recommend shipping on this. This is why I am suggesting local pickup on this item. I am willing to drive up to 200 miles and meet you on a Saturday or Sunday for .50 cents per mile if this is something that might interest you. If you have some other proposal for retrieval of this item please contact me before bidding to make sure it is something we can agree on.
This item is being sold as is with no warranty or returns being offered.
